I found a book of maps and directions
Of places we’d gone before the world was infected
And there was a page onto which it was written
The address of a stranger who’d have us for breakfast

I drew an old church with its ancient graveyard
And wrote out the names of the people who lay there
You at the wheel and I at the paper
Tried to outrun the rain but could not escape her

Words they trail off and thoughts they are scribbles
I sometimes get lost and leave right in the middle
You at the wheel as the rain gently tapered
Then I dropped my pen, we slipped into the vapour

Cross out the seasons and tear back the years
A fog in the eyes, a song in the ears
Oh fabric of names
Oh thoughts without weight
Climb, you wild vines,
Climb over the mind’s hardened gate

I found a book of maps and directions
Premonitions of danger and fragrant reflections
